WHO I AM IN CHIRST?

WHO I AM IN CHIRST?

Have you ever paused to truly ask yourself: Who am I in Christ? In the midst of all our religious activity—our striving, our serving, even our worship—it’s a question that can quietly fade into the background. But this truth is foundational, and rediscovering it could be the most freeing moment of your life.

“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. Old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.”  2 Corinthians 5:17

This isn’t about striving toward change or making promises we can’t keep. This is a now promise. In Christ, the old is gone. The old struggles, the old habits, the old failures - they have passed away. We are made new by the power of the Holy Spirit and the redemption of Jesus Christ.

Back in the Garden of Eden, Adam and Eve didn’t just bite into a piece of fruit, they embraced a dangerous theology: I can be godly without God. That same lie still whispers today: “I can do this on my own.” But we can’t. Not by our strength. Not by our wisdom. Not by our efforts.

God gave the Law to Israel to show this very point: No matter how hard we try, we can’t fulfill God’s standards by human effort. That’s why Paul said:

“What I want to do, I do not do. But what I hate, I do… O wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me?”  Romans 7:15, 24

The answer? Jesus Christ.

The Law was our tutor and it showed us our need for a Savior. It brought us to the point where we realized: I can’t do this. And that’s where grace met us. The moment we stop trying to clean ourselves up and instead fall into the grace of God, something beautiful happens:

“Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!”  John 1:29

Only when we come to the end of ourselves do we see the Lamb clearly.

Let’s anchor ourselves in the truth of what Scripture says about our identity:

1. I am the righteousness of God in Christ Jesus

  • 2 Corinthians 5:21

  • Not my righteousness but His. I am as clean and accepted before God as Christ is, because I am in Him.

2. I am raised to new life

  • Romans 8:11

  • The same Spirit who raised Christ from the dead now gives life to me.

3. I am the temple of the Holy Spirit

  • 1 Corinthians 6:19

  • God dwells in me. I’m not just an idea about God but I’m His dwelling place.

4. I am seated with Christ in heavenly places

  • Ephesians 2:6

  • My spirit is already in victory, seated beside Jesus in authority and love.

5. I am more than a conqueror

  • Romans 8:37

  • The game is won. The victory is secure. Christ has overcome, and I am in Him.

6. I am sealed in the Father’s hand

  • John 10:28-29

  • No one can snatch me out of His hand.

7. I live by God’s promises, not by mine

  • 2 Peter 1:2–4

  • The Christian life isn’t about promising God we’ll do better. It’s about believing what He’s promised us.

8. I have an assured future

  • Philippians 3:13–14

  • I press toward the goal, not because I’m perfect, but because He is faithful.

9. I am a son or daughter of God

  • John 1:12

  • Loved. Chosen. Adopted into His family.

Yes, we stumble. But we are no longer defined by our failures. For the sincere believers,  those who are not playing games with God, our sins are not counted against us.

“If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us…” 1 John 1:9

Jesus took our failures upon Himself. We’re not called to live under condemnation but to walk in freedom. God doesn’t need our strength but He wants our honest hearts.

Don’t let your failures, emotions, or the enemy define your worth. Let God tell you who you are. As Carter Conlon said so powerfully:

“You don’t have to bring Me your victories,” says the Lord. “Bring Me your defeats. Bring Me your honest heart. And I will redeem you. I will hold you. I will love you. I will confess you before My Father until the day I bring you home.”

That’s the promise. That’s the Gospel. That’s who we are in Christ.

Are you tired? Done trying to fix it yourself?

Come to Jesus. Lay it down. Surrender your strength and pick up His. You don’t have to earn your place because you already have it. In Christ, you are beloved, righteous, and free.

“You shall know the truth, and the truth shall set you free.” John 8:32
